How does SCOTCHGARD Work?
Scotchgard forms a protective shield surrounding each fibre, protecting it from water and oil-based stain. The scotchgarded formula was discovered accidentally by Patsy Sherman and Samuel Smith. They received a patent for the procedure in 1973. Originally, Scotchgarded key ingredient was perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which, with much pressure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency due to its toxicity and global distribution, has been phased out for the last ten years. Instead, Scotchgard has used perfluorobutane sulfonic Acid (PFBS), which, unfortunately, has a much shorter life span.
The Scotchgard formula helps to prevent liquids and dirt from penetrating fabric fibres in your carpets and upholstery, but it isn’t infallible. Used, it will help keep your furniture, rugs, and clothes looking cleaner for longer. With all that said, please don’t be mistaken. Having Scotchgard doesn’t mean your carpets are impenetrable. It would be best if you never left any spillages on the carpet. It will eventually set in. Scotchgard gives you that extra time to prevent the stain from soaking in while protecting your belongings. It won’t affect the colour, look or feel of the belonging.

It has a massive range of cleaning and protection. It is perfectly safe to have around children and pets if used correctly and thoroughly dried.
Scotchgard shouldn’t affect the object, such as stiffening or colour run. Still, in some cases, if this were to happen, it could be caused by over-application or accelerated drying, e.g., using heat or cool fans to try and speed up the drying process.
This can be rectified in most cases with a simple vacuum or gentle brushing of the affected area, and it should feel normal again.
We advise ensuring the carpet’s protection whenever you get a professional deep clean with a powerful extraction steam cleaning machine. Scotchgard is applied once the cleaning is complete, and it is recommended this be completed at least once every year.
It is advised to apply Scotchgard to the desired area when you have plenty of time to allow it to dry entirely at an average room temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, 50% humidity. An overnight drying time should allow most objects/carpets to dry. However, if the temperature is colder or the room is more humid, the drying time can prevent the object/carpet from drying and prolong the drying time. Other reasons can be that good ventilation will also help ensure that the objects/carpet dry in a reasonable amount of time if a heavy application has been applied.

There are some fabrics that we wouldn’t recommend using Scotchgard on. A few of them are
- white wool rugs
- oriental rugs
- no colorfast rugs
- upholstery that states explicitly dry clean only
