What is Scotchgard Protector ?

Simply sprayed on, your carpet or upholstery has an invisible protective barrier. Repelling and blocking whatever life has to throw at it, meaning it can look newer for longer. Scotchgard Protector is  also one of the most used carpet cleaning products in professional carpet cleaning.

How SCOTCHGARD Works ?

Scotchgard forms a protective shield surrounding each fiber, protecting it from water and oil based stains. Scotchgarded formula was discovered accidentally by Patsy Sherman and Samuel Smith. They received a patent for the formula in 1973. Originally scotchgarded key ingredient was perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which, with a lot of pressure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency due to its toxicity and global distribution, has been phased out for the last 10 years. Instead Scotchgard have used perfluorobutanesulfonic Acid (PFBS), which unfortunately, has a much shorter life span.

The Scotchgard formula helps to prevent liquids and dirt from penetrating fabric fibers in your carpets and upholstery, but it isn’t infallible. Used, it will help keep your furniture, carpets, clothes looking cleaner for longer. With all that said, please don’t be mistaken, having Scotchgard doesn’t mean your carpets is impenetrable. You should never leave any spillages on the carpet. It will eventually set in. Scotchgard simply gives you that extra bit of time to prevent the stain soaking in whilst protecting your belongings. It won’t affect the color, look or feel of the belonging in any way.

It really is a massive range of cleaning and protection. It is perfectly safe to have around children and pets provided it is used correctly and once completely dried.

Scotchgard shouldn’t have any effect on the object such as stiffening or colour run but in some cases if this was to happen it can be caused by over application or accelerated drying eg, using heat or cool fans to try and speed up the drying process.

This can be rectified in most cases with a simple vacuum or gentle brushing of the affected area and it should feel normal again.

We would advise that on carpets to ensure the protection of the carpet, that every time you get a professional deep clean with a powerful extraction steam carpet cleaning machine. Scotchgard is applied once the clean is complete and recommend this to be completed at least once every year.

It is advised to apply scotchgard to the desired area when you have plenty of time to allow it to dry completely, at an average room temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, 50% humidity. An overnight drying time should give enough time for most objects/carpets to dry, however if the temperature is colder or the room is more humid the drying time can prevent the object/carpet drying and prolong the drying time. Other reasons can be if a heavy application has been applied, a good ventilation will also help to ensure that the objets/carpet dry in a reasonable amount of time.

There are some fabrics that we wouldn’t recommend using scotchgard on a few of them are

• white wool rugs
• oriental rugs
• no colourfast rugs
• upholstery that specifically states dry clean only

We always recommend checking the washing able to be sure that the item/surface is suitable mort of the cleaning labels will have either a ‘w’ or a ‘ws’ to confirm it is safe to clean with water. If you are still unsure a simple colourfast test can be performed on an unseen part of the object/surface.

These ideas on how to use toothpaste are so simple and so effective, and let’s face it toothpaste isn’t the most expensive product in the world and you don’t even have to use a massive brand of toothpaste, a simple mild abrasive, a surfactant (detergent), and an antibacterial agent makes toothpaste a potent stain-fighter. But try to Stick with standard paste, not a gel as they are more effective. Here you are some ideas for cleaning with toothpaste:

1. This one is going to Change the lives of Mums and Dads everywhere, Children love to express themselves in many ways and Drawing and making their masterpieces is one of their Favourites although it’s not always in the places you would agree on, Crayon on your lovely beige Painted wall is probably not one of the places that you Both agreed on. Crayon being a wax is to some extent Waterproof and can be Tough getting off without ruining the paint. Well if you Gently dab some Toothpaste with a Damp cloth onto the Masterpiece and Gently rub then Rinse with a Damp cloth you’ll be Amazed to see that your child’s Artwork is gone and your wall is back to its Original clean state.
2. Water Rings on your Coffee table or Surface, no problem just Squeeze some Toothpaste onto the Affected area and give it a Scrub with a Toothbrush you may need to Rinse with a Damp Cloth and Repeat this process a few times but once finished you will have ring free surface.
3. Now this one’s easy, Bathroom Sinks, Next time you’re Scrubbing away at your teeth just drop a blob of Toothpaste into the sink Scrubbing it around the whole sink then Rinse, Not only does this give it a Gleam it also makes the drain smell Minty Fresh.
4. Toilets, now bleach is Normally used for this Particular place but i find that Bleach has such a strong Smell and can Linger for days. So i’d suggest grabbing your usual Toilet scrubbing brush and Squeeze a Fair amount of Toothpaste onto it, Now scrub under the Rim and around the Entire Toilet Bowl this will help Remove Limescale and it smells a whole lot better than bleach.
5. Steam irons, Mineral deposits in water can stain an Iron’s Soleplate making it look Rough,Grubby and Old. All you need to do to Restore this is simply Apply a blob of toothpaste and work it into the plate with a circular motion then Use a clean cloth to remove and residue. shiney smooth clean soleplate.
6. Yellowing Piano Keys, for all you Musicians out there you will know that after a while the piano keys can become Yellow or off Colour, these can be Restored simply with a Whitening Toothpaste this time simply rub each individual piano key gently with a damp cotton swab and a blob of toothpaste (whitening) then wipe dry and give it a Buff with a clean Cloth, the keys should be nice and White once finished.
7. Most taps are Chrome and if you’ve noticed them getting Water Marks from Splashes and Spills Toothpaste has the answer just Rub some onto the Chrome and Wipe away with a Damp Cloth and you will see your Chrome Shine and Shimmer again.
8. When you get out of the Shower and go to Admire yourself in the Mirror you can never see because of the Steam Misting it up. Toothpaste will act as a Defogger so that you can see Clearly just Smear some Toothpaste directly to the Mirror and Dry Wipe it off this will allow you to Admire yourself clearly.
9. Patio furniture, Now this one will require a Scrubbing brush and some Will power but once you’ve Scrubbed a Mixture of Toothpaste and Water over your Furniture you’ll be Amazed at the Results, If you have White Furniture you can even use some Whitening Toothpaste to Restore the Whiteness.
10. Jewelry, this one is a personal favorite, all jewelry after being worn for many years can loose its shine and glitz, access buildup of creams, skin, make-up and so on can make the piece look old and dull, grab yourself a toothbrush and give the desired piece a scrub with a blob of paste, rinse with some water scrubbing still if necessary and one you have rinsed all of the bubbled paste away you will be left with a sparkling diamond, jewel ect, as good as new.

This week we are going to look at how we can use Vinegar to Tackle Everyday Cleaning Situations, this is Possible due to the Antibacterial and Antimicrobial Properties Vinegar has. Some of these Methods may work, some may not. Not all have been tried and  tested by myself Personally, but I will certainly give them a try at some point. Ill keep you updated. Of course you could always let me know if you have tried them, or if you have any other Methods for Cleaning.

Ok, I have 10 or so different way of using Vinegar, so lets get started.

1. Microwave Cleaning – Place a Cup of Vinegar inside, Heat up for 3-4 Minutes. Leave to sit for 30 Minutes. Remove the Cup of Vinegar, and Wipe Clean. Use the Vinegar neat if you have slightly harder to clean areas.
2. Water Rings on Wooden Surfaces – Add equal parts Vinegar and Vegetable Oil. Use this Mixture to wipe away the Marks. This also works on Leather.
3. Oven Grills – Just Spray the Vinegar onto the Grills and Scrub using a Wire Brush until Clean.
4. Drainage – Kitchen or Bathroom Drains are usually quite Smelly. Pour a Cup of White Vinegar down the Sink and leave for an hour or so. After this run the tap for a few seconds to flush the Vinegar away. Job Done!
5. Kitchen or Bathroom Fixtures – Vinegar can be used an Alternative Cleaner, It is able to Kill Bacteria, Mould & Mildew. Just spray onto the Fixtures and rinse afterwards. You can leave to soak if needed, then wash.

1. Cleaning the Fridge – Add 2 Cups of Vinegar to a Gallon of Warm Water. Use this Mixture to clean the Fridge. Use Vinegar neat on the Harder to Clean Areas.
2. Clogged Shower Head – Fill a Bag, Like the ones you get from the Fair with Goldfish in, with Vinegar and Wrap it around the Shower Head. Please be sure to remove the Goldfish first 😉 Leave it there overnight and it should be back to full power.

1. Dull Silver – Add 2 Table Spoons of Baking Soda to a Cup of Vinegar. You can apply the Solution to the Silverware but if Possible its better to leave them to soak, for about 15 Minutes. Then Rinse with Warm Water and Polish up with Soft Cloth.
2. Rusty Tools – Anything that you may have with Rust on, should be left to Soak in Vinegar Overnight, Scrubbing off the Rust will now be a lot Easier.
3. Sticky Label Removal – This works not only for Sticky Labels, Such as Price Tags, But also the Residue left by Car Stickers and Window Decals. Simply Spray the Area with Vinegar, wait a Few Minutes, and clean with a Towel or Cloth.
4. Whitening Clothes – If you add a Cup of Vinegar and Quarter Cup Baking Soda to your Washing. This will Help Whitten your Clothes.
5. Ant Deterrent – Ants follow the scents left behind by other Ants, This means one Ant leads to another, and before you know it, u have an Infestation! Spray Vinegar around Doors, Skirting, Windows, the usual areas, this will get rid of the Scent left.
6. Odors – Whether in the Bathroom, Kitchen or even that Mysterious Smell in the Car, Air Fresheners simple try to Mask Odours, The Acetic Acids in Vinegar Absorb these Odors, rather than just trying to cover the Bad Smell with Nicer Smell, Which in my Opinion is no Better than the Original Bad Smell. Granted Air Fresheners do Smell Nice, but not when Mixed with Rotten Food or a Drain Stench. You can either Spray the Vinegar or Just leave it in a Bowl to Rid those Bad Odors.

Microwave

Basically just squeeze Lemon Juice into some Water, even throw in the Rinds after, and Microwave. You will soon notice the condensation from the boiling Liquid appearing on the sides, the Natural Cleaning Agents in the Lemon Juice will Dissolve Dried on foods and loosen any Gunk built up. Once done, You just need to wipe away with a Damp Cloth. Simple. This is very useful when its time for the end of tenancy cleaning.

Here’s How its Done

1. Pour half a cup of Water into a Bowl.
2. Cut a Lemon into two halves, Squeeze as much of Lemon Juice into the bowl of Water. Once Squeezed, place the two halves into the Bowl as well.
3. Place Bowl in the Microwave, Microwave at Full Power for around 3-4 Minutes, so the Liquid starts to Boil.
4. Leave the Bowl inside the Microwave for 5 Minutes to allow the Steam inside to loosen the Food and Grime.
5. Simply wipe clean with a Dry or Damp Cloth. If there is any Stubborn Spots left over you can just Wet the Cloth using the Lemon Water from the Bowl, and give a little Scrub.

Copperware

Whether used in the Kitchen or purely for display purposes. Copper looks great when brought back to its Shiny Condition. Your Likely to have these two ingredients in your Pantry already, Lemon and Salt are a Great Combination when it comes to Cleaning. Simply add the Salt to a Sliced Lemon and use that Lemon to Scrub at the Pot, Pan etc. You can also squeeze the Lemon into a bowl and add the Salt to make a Paste which can be left to soak on stubborn dried on foods.

1. Slice Lemon in Half and use as though it was a Sponge or Cloth, adding Salt as often as needed, until area is Clean.
2. If needed, You can Squeeze the Lemon into a Bowl and add Salt to form a Paste, for Tougher areas. Apply the Paste to the Lemon and Scrub as needed. You can also leave the Paste to Soak on the more Difficult areas.
3. Rinse thoroughly using warm Water and Dry, Buffing with Dry Clean Cloth for Best Results.

Please Note: This method does not work with Lacquered Copper, Please check before you try this method.

Wooden Chopping Board

Even when Cleaned after use, we recommend this method once a week, if used regularly. You will see why by the Results. A Dirty Sludge that you will be scraping away after. Also you can add some Baking Soda to the mix.

1. Shake Salt over the Chopping Board.
2. Using the cut side down of the Lemon, Scrub the Board, Squeezing the Lemon whilst you do so.
3. Once Scrubbed the whole of the Board, leave the paste to soak for 10 Minutes.
4. Scrape away the Paste.
5. Give the Board a Rinse with Warm Water and Dry.

Worktop / Butchers Block

Removing Stains in itself can be a Challenge. Here are 2 Methods, One Being for Lighter Stains using the same Method as the Cutting Board and the Other for Darker Stains adding Hydrogen Peroxide and White Vinegar.

Lighter Stains

1. Shake Salt over the Stain, Covering all of it.
2. Slice the Lemon on Half, Squeeze the Juices into the Salt Forming a Paste.
3. Rub the Paste into the Stain using the Half of the Lemon as a Scrubber.
4. Leave the Paste to soak overnight
5. Rinse off using Warm Water.

Darker Stains

1. Pour Warm Water into a Glass.
2. Add 1 tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide.
3. Dab All Over the Stain.
4. Dab again using White Vinegar.

You can now use Salt and Lemon Method as well if you wish.

5. Wipe down thoroughly with a clean Cloth.

Blender

Simply Blend a Lemon with some Dishwashing Liquid for a Sparkling Shiny Finish.

Cutlery

Again, Simply use a Used Lemon to Polish up to Streak Free Shine. Add Salt if you have any Rust marks appearing.

Plastic Tubs/Containers

Rub a Lemon over the sides to Clean and Remove bad Smells, Rinse after.

Make You Own All Purpose Kitchen/Bathroom Cleaner

This works with any Citrus, Lemon, Orange, Lime Peelings…  and Vinegar. Not Only do the Citrus Peels Smell Great, they Provide Extra Cleaning Power.

1. Instead of throwing away the Peelings of your Citrus, Save them into a Large Sealable Jar.
2. When the Jar is Half Full, Fill the Jar with Vinegar. Seal the Jar up again and leave somewhere for at Least 2 weeks to allow the Citrus to Infuse with the Vinegar, The Longer you leave it the Better.
3. When you are ready to use, place a Fine Mesh Sieve over a Bowl and Pour the Liquid from the Jar into the Bowl. Dispose of the Peels.
4. Pour the Liquid from the Bowl into a Spray Bottle and use as you would any other All Purpose Cleaner.

Try this the next time you have to do the end of tenancy cleaning.

Removing Soapy Scum

Soap Scum forms when the Soap Residue Combines with the Minerals in the Tap Water. This layer of Greyish/White Film covers itself on Tiles, Toilets, Floors, Fixings etc. Try Slices a Lemon in Half and Rubbing it over the Affected Areas. The Acids in the Citrus Fruit breaks down the Dirt and Bacteria. To avoid the build up of Soap Scum, Always rinse thoroughly after each use.

Build Of Rust Stains

Rust begins to form when the Iron on Bathroom or Kitchen fixtures start to corrode. Its Important to remove these Ugly Brown Stains as soon as they start to appear. Rubbing a Cut Lemon over these areas until they are gone is an easy solution. If the Rust is worse you can create a Paste by squeezing Lemon Juice into some Laundry Powder, then work into the Rusted Area.

Stained Toilets

Using the same Paste Method above, Mixing Lemon Juice with Stain Remover Laundry Power, apply to a Scouring Sponge and Scrub that Toilet. Not the most enjoyable part of Cleaning but it will be worth it. The Laundry Powder will help remove the Stains as it would to the Stains on your Clothes.

Mildew Remover

Mildew forms mostly in Damp, Warm environments, so the Bathroom is the most common place to find Mildew. In The Bathtub, Shower Cubicles, or Curtains. Mildew can be harmful to your health if Exposed to too much, causing problem to the Respiratory System.

To Remove Mineral and Mildew Stains, Soak in Salty Water for 20-30 minutes. Rub the Stain with a Sliced Lemon . Rinse and Wipe Clean with a Wet Cloth or Sponge.

Glass / Window Cleaner

You can make your own Glass or Window Cleaner by Simply adding the Following Ingredients to a Spray Bottle of Water. ¼ Teaspoon of Dishwasher Liquid, ½ Cup or Rubbing Alcohol and 3 Tablespoons of Lemon Juice. Mix all these ingredients together and Shake Well. That’s it, your very own Glass & Window Cleaner without the Harsh Chemicals.

 Having Pets in your Home Doesn’t mean your Carpets are going to be forever ruined. With accumulating Hair,  Stains  and Nasty Smells that seem to accompany most Pets. To help keep you Carpets clean, use a Spot Cleaner,  Urine  Neutraliser and Odor Eliminators for when those Accidents do happen.

 Pet Hair

The main problem with pets is of course the Hair. Pet Hair gets Everywhere, but more so in the Carpets, This can  block or even damage your Vacuum. We suggest using a Pet Grooming Brush on the Carpet before hand. Or you  could  even fashion a Home Made lint roller using Tape and a Paint Roller. Its Recommended that you do this at  least 3 times  per week, Creating a Cleaner, Safer environment for your Family and Pets.

Urine

It happens, No matter how well your pet may be trained. Here is what you can do.

• Grab a towel and place it over the Urine, pressing down on the towel will help soak up much of the Moisture.
• Add a little dishwashing detergent to a cup of warm water, using a cloth or brush, work the mixture into the affected area.
• Rinse the area well with water and a clean cloth.
• Place a towel or some paper towels over the cleaned area and apply pressure to soak up as much of the moisture as possible.

You could also use 2 parts water and 1 part white vinegar, dabbed over the area to help deter your pet from using that area again.

Stains

All pet owners know that at some point they will be faced with some, maybe even all types of stains, whether is be Vomit, Excrement, Urine, Blood or whatever the Pet may drag in from the outside. Most of the time it is possible to remove these stains, but it is likely that you will require Professional help. We can bring our Professional Equipment and Materials, along with necessary Chemicals to do this for you. However there are Products that you can buy specifically to remove pet stains, but be aware that its not going to be easy, be prepared to work up a sweat.

Again, before attempting to use any odor neutralising treatment, its advised that you get somebody with a powerful Extraction Machine, Premium Clean for example, to come and clean the Carpet first, Forcing only clean water into the fibres and extracting out any left over chemicals from previous cleaners or treatments, this is because the chemical residue can inhibit the enzymes from removing the odors from the Carpet. You can use powdered odor eliminators on dry carpets, or liquid urine odor eliminator products that utilize bio-enzymatic ingredients to eliminate the bacteria that causes the odor.
